Nike clearly have a good feeling about 2019.

Introducing the Black Lux Pack, as it’s officially known, featuring gold accents on blacked-out uppers, utilising an animal skin-inspired texturing effect that takes its cues from the Mercurial’s new “Fast By Nature” direction. The wild styling extends across all four silos, allowing the Tiempo and Phantom VSN to try out an understated version of the primal look. It's also the first colour update for the Phantom VNM, setting the bar very, very high for a silo still in its infancy.

First up, the new Phantom VNM, which looks outrageously good in the black and gold. Somehow, the colour scheme seems to improve the aesthetics of the boot’s shape. It’s the perfect combination: streamlining on the lateral side with the partial lace cover and Flywire texturing, then those chunky ridges on the medial side for power and spin generation. All the main materials of the boot are black, with gold limited to the Swooshes, tech callouts, stud tips, and the insole. Great decision by Nike not to overdo the bling on these – despite being early in its lifecycle, this could end up being one of the classic VNM colourways.

The Black Lux Phantom VSN, meanwhile, marks a rare occasion where the silo’s trademark triangular midfoot panel is the same colour as the rest of the boot. If we’re honest, we probably would have preferred the panel to have been gold, but then it wouldn’t be a blackout, would it? The gold-tipped studs on the FG and AG plates are a more natural fit on the Phantom, however, complementing the Hyperprecision micro-textured areas underfoot in an eye-catching design.

As expected by now, if Mercurial is your weapon of choice you have the luxury of both Vapor and Superfly, and the only difference between the two, as usual, is the collar. Both boots are available at Elite level in FG and AG, with gold tips on the soleplates completing the luxury look. It’s the Anti-Clog SG version we prefer though, with its standard all-black plate that’s a perfect match for the upper. There hasn’t been a black and gold Mercurial this good since the special edition Flyknit Ultra that Eden Hazard wore in 2017.

We’ve seen a fair few regal-looking Tiempos released in recent times, from Ronaldinho and Sergio Ramos special editions to the White/Black/Gold celebration of the silo Nike dropped at the end of last year. None of those was quite as stealthily sleek as the new release, however, with the black upper adorned by minimalist gold details in addition to the animal-print Swooshes. Look at the little golden Swoosh on the inside heel – that’s just class.
