It may not quite be the Ballon D'or, but it’s comes in as the second-best individual award for a player in European football. The FIFA ‘The Best’ Award is given to a player based on their respective achievements during the period between 16 July 2018 to 19 July 2019 inclusive. The ten-man shortlist is compiled by a ‘panel of experts’, and yes, I know what you’re thinking, probably a bunch of nobodies that came up with the shortlist. But don’t get ahead of yourself our young football angels, this “panel” consisted of Xavi, Kaka, Lothar Matthaus, Fabio Capello, Franco Baresi, Juan Sebastian Veron, Francisco Maturana and Hugo Sanchez.
Not a bad list of ex-players to decide who should win. However… after this it’s then up to the fans, national team coaches, captains and journalists to choose between 3 finalists from the list of 10. Of course it’s tough to move Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi of their perch so they’re in the final choose. But, after this, it was between eight other candidates to join the GOAT’s to see if they have the chance to win The Best FIFA Football Awards. An awards show taking place today in Milan.
Below are the 3 finalists for the award, plus the other candidates that unfortunately didn’t make the cut.
