Since its introduction the best part of four years ago, adidas’s laceless technology has been the preserve of the elite player. Not prepared to pay £200-plus for your football boots? Sorry pal, no comfy lace-free fit for you.

Today though, that’s all set to change, as adidas bring laceless tech to the masses in the form of a new Predator 19.3. Scroll down for the details on what’s likely to be one of the most popular boots this Christmas.

First things first, let’s take a look at that laceless sock and collar. It’s Purecut, like the 19+ model, but features a slightly lower collar, which is rounded off at the top with a black hem. That tiny bit of extra bulk on the collar means the boot doesn’t sit quite as flush on the ankle as the top-line model, but it’s perfectly comfortable, and stays tight enough to ensure proper lockdown. Interestingly, the new boot’s sock is overall a more premium execution than that of the laced 19.3, and the fused join with the Primemesh upper is very nicely done too.
Elsewhere, it’s mainly cosmetic changes. The three stripes on the lateral side are black, rather than the Initiator Pack’s standard red, and the black and red on the soleplate have been switched around for an alternative look. It’s a good move from adidas. The subtle colour changes serve to differentiate the new boot from every other Predator in the range, making it clear that this is a landmark release for the brand. So, what about price? Let’s try to work it out. The FG, laced 19.1 Predator is £180; the FG, laceless 19+ is £230. The FG, laced Predator 19.3 is £75; the FG, laceless 19.3 is – what do you reckon? A ton? Nope: £85. In short, you’re getting laceless technology, one of the best innovations of the last 20 years, for an extra £10. Considering how well-constructed the boot is compared to its laced equivalent, and, in our opinion, its superior aesthetics, that’s an absolute steal.

We think adidas are onto a winner here. If you’ve been holding off getting a pair of laceless boots because of the price, consider your prayers answered: the Predator 19.3 Laceless is a superb boot, and excellent value too. We’ll have to wait and see if adidas decide to unlace their other silos at lower tiers, but, for now, this is easily the best laceless boot you can get for under £100.
