Merc HEader

The second of this generation of Mercurial Vapor’s and Superfly’s dropped in the summer and we were rating those sleek lines and deadly tech that’s helped light up everything from the Premier League to park pitches across the globe. And, six months since their debut, we’ve decided to put our neck on the line and rate the best of the current class of Mercurial.

There have been loads of Merc drops but the Swoosh have saved the best till last with this month’s incredible Mbappé X Bondy Dreams release which takes the W for us. The Superfly VII Elite’s platinum base with pastel greens and bold gold looks so sick and signals the start of what is an exciting chapter with Mbappé’s first signature boot. If this first outing is anything to go by, the Mbappé X Nike combination looks set to bless us with more perfection for years to come.

From the latest to the earliest drop. The New Lights pack saw the introduction of the Vapor XIII and Superfly VII in blue and white that can still be seen on the feet of some of the world’s best months after its release. The colour combo is a winner and takes some beating, but those Mbappé boots are special, aren’t they?

We loved the brave Dream Speed when it dropped and it still stands up. A tribute to blistering pace, the Superfly’s were worn on pitch by a legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, and the rising star, Mbappé. Nike may have more plans in the future for the Dream Speed and we can’t wait. Bring on 2020.

Our next two favourites are at the extremes of both ends of the scale. The Nuovo White boots with iridescent silvery details are as clean as they come and look unbelievable.

But, the blackout Tech Craft Vapor runs it close with those slick looks and luxurious leather upper.

Another recent drop that’s still fresh in our minds for all the right reasons is the Terra Pack. A desert sand colourway is super classy as the purple and green sections pop from the soleplate for a vibrant yet understated, sophisticated look.

Singles Day is a phenomenon that’s getting bigger and if Nike are going to drop fire red and black Vapor’s like they did for 2019 we’re completely on board. Love at first sight.

The ‘Under the Radar’ drop would figure higher on this list if it wasn’t for the rare Tech Craft release. If you want a super-modern black boot with the latest possible tech you should look no further.

Another one for the Chinese fans, CR7 got a special limited edition Superfly ‘Shuai’, which fittingly, translates to commander and has Far East flavour all over.

We also love Neymar’s Speed Freak Vapor which pays homage to his passion for motor racing with a chequered flag design. Motor racing X Mercurial. A match made in heaven.

The Laser Orange Special Edition was as loud as a classic Merc should be so ticked a lot of boxes for us and Nike even managed to land another two special drops after the women’s World Cup. One celebrated the US women’s team’s triumph and for the other their star player, Megan Rapinoe, copped a pink and gold Vapor.

It’s no mean feat trying to rate the always-excellent Mercurial silo but picking the No.1 spot was a piece of cake. 2020 looks set to be another fire year for the Swoosh so make sure you’re following Pro:Direct Soccer’s social channels to see sneak peaks of the hottest drops in the game first.
