Before we go onto why Nike don’t want to release these, let’s just take a moment to acknowledge how irresistible these new Tech Craft Mercurial’s are. Go on, soak it in – these are quite possibly the best-looking boots we’ve seen so far this year. Don’t make the mistake of dismissing these as just another black out drop - they are so much more than that. It’s the marriage of leather to speed that takes the Vapor 13 to a whole new level. The premium k-leather upper steals the headlines, traditional in colour but still sporting that sleek, modern profile. Yep, they are addictive.
So why wouldn’t Nike want to release these boots? A quick recap on what Tech Craft is all about will give us the answer. Back in 2015, Nike first dropped the Tech Craft concept by taking their line up and offering us premium leather versions of boots that normally only shipped as synthetic upper options. The only problem was, they were more hybrid leather than full on leather editions. Still, the Tech Craft option has always proved hugely popular, despite some questionable follow up colour combos. It wasn’t until a year later that the hybrid theory was dropped for a full leather and powerful black out combination that turned the Tech Craft option to a serious contender. The precedent was set and repeated in 2017, the last time we saw a Tech Craft drop.
If all this makes Tech Craft the perfect mix, why don’t Nike want this boot in the market? Well, simply, it’s because all the innovation and performance advancements behind the Vapor just get overlooked in favour of that sensational leather upper. But here’s the twist – this time around, the Tech Craft execution brings a new dimension to those technologies. The leather wraps around the boot, debossed with the current Mercurial generation call outs and leaves a clean, pure striking area. We still get the acceleration focused split sole plate and overall a lightweight speed package, but the use of leather adds toned down visuals to the modest style and classy aesthetic.
Which, if you ask us, makes the 2019 Tech Craft Vapor more desirable.
Right, drop details time. Tech Craft boots have a tradition of not staying on the shelves for very long and this Vapor 13 is no different. Nike don’t like to produce many of these boots so if you want a pair, you’ll have to act fast.
