No doubt influenced in part by Antoine Griezmann’s never-ending repertoire of Fortnite goal celebrations, PUMA are going all in on gaming for 2019 with the release of the Power Up Pack.

Featuring new generations of both the Future and the One, this year’s first PUMA collection is evolution rather than revolution. The clue’s in the name, really: it’s all about powering up for next-level performance.

Both boots feature a bold “Bleu Azur/Red Blast” colourway, although executed in very different ways. The Future is pretty much entirely red, while the One features an almost equal mix of black, blue, and red.

Structurally there are no huge changes to either boot, particularly the One, which is largely similar to last year’s model. It does though feature an improved texture on the upper, with contoured ridges for maximum spin generation, and also feels more streamlined on foot. As before, you can choose between K-leather and synthetic options – for the same price too, which is nice.

The Future, meanwhile, undergoes a more dramatic update, boasting an improved version of the NETFIT lacing system. Where previous generations added a separate NETFIT element to a textile base material, here the lacing system is fully integrated with the evoKNIT pro upper, providing even greater customisability in terms of fit and generally improving the overall feel of the boot.

You’ll also notice what PUMA are calling their “3D Havoc Frame”, which is the underlying structure that produces those mountainous-looking ridges on the upper. (We’d love to see a snow-capped Alpine colourway, if you’re listening, PUMA.) Performance-wise, they have the effect of increasing both power and control, providing cushioning when you receive the ball and additional force when you strike it.

While the Power Up Pack is inspired by gaming’s virtual arenas, the Future and the One are firmly rooted in the real world, and PUMA are slowly but surely improving their on-pitch offering. Players don’t just switch brands for the sake of it, so when you see the likes of Luis Suarez and Romelu Lukaku lacing up in the Big Cat’s first range of 2019, it’s because they enjoy wearing the boots. We’re very, very confident you will too.
