What next for the World's most stylish football club?

If you're the Swedish champions AIK, 'next' is to continue the full-on embracing of jersey culture with an unexpected take on their iconic 1891 collection - this is the 1891 White Limited Edition shirt. Having made significant noise with a remarkable Black Edition, attention now turns to a crisp, clean white and gold drop ahead of the club's return to domestic duties.

The 1891 collection is all about celebration of the club and its' DNA - celebrating the founding year of the club is about celebrating beginnings, and that the greatest challenges and triumphs always lie ahead. Part of that DNA is certainly tied to knowing where you came from - something AIK are proudly aware of. That's why you won't see any chest-puffing call outs on the shirt, it's back to business ahead of the upcoming season.

For a club most famous for their Black Kits, AIK actually won their first trophy in whilst wearing their change kit of white back in 1900. To this day the club have stuck with that tried and tested formula for home and away, giving the design of this shirt plenty of sentiment and honour.

AIK has become one of the most talked about brands in Sweden, helped by the club’s first Swedish league title in nine years in 2018. However, what has grabbed the attention of worldwide media is the clubs’ embracing of football shirt culture by producing some of the most in demand and desirable kits of recent seasons.

The “1891” in gold numbers can be found in the AIK crest, drawn in 1898 by Fritz Carling and unchanged to this day. The golden details of the crest – letters, lining, sun and towers – led to AIK being styled “the Club With Golden Lining” (klubben med guldkant) in the 40s, a term still used today (at the time, the club was suitably run by club legend Herbert “The Bank” Ohlsson). Hence, the gold of the 1891 White Edition is a homage to the club’s beginnings and DNA rather than a boast of last year’s league victory.

If you are one of the fortunate recipients of this Shirt of Art, you'll be faced with a dilemma usually the preserve of collectors. Before you even getting to the shirt, there are layers of premium luxury to delve through, starting with the all-over newspaper print wrap that features notable stories from the club's foray into jersey culture. Get through this intact (it's a process that definitely requires concentration) and you'll be rewarded with the presentation box itself.

The 1891 White edition shirt is housed in a true luxury, as the all-important year is printed on the front in the same gold lettering as on the jersey itself. The theme continues on the inside as the shirt lives inside bespoke gold patterned paper, deliberately teasing  you to break the AIK crest seal in order to reveal the shirt.

It would be hard not to keep making references to the all-black kit, but there is genuine significance on this occasion. The clean look is really only made possible as the club's principal sponsors have again generously agreed to be clear from the shirt, replaced by the now iconic 1891 logo. AIK respond with generosity of their own as just like the 1891 Black edition, all profit from the sale of the shirts are donated to the AIK Fotball Mentor program for young people, who through football works to counter segregation in Stockholm suburbs.
