Best Ever Ballon d'Or Football Boots
Who do you reckon then? Modric, Ronaldo, Mbappe, Griezmann – Messi? The battle for the Ballon d’Or is more open than it’s been in years.
But when it comes to the boots, the celebratory editions created by the brands for the winning player tend to be some of the most unique of all. Since 2010 the winner has been honoured with a predictably gold themed exclusive release, sometimes just for the museum but more recently available for us mere mortals. There have been some absolute classics in that time and whilst there’s not much choice player-wise, of course – Messi or CR7 – it’s still fun to pick out your favourites. The special edition Black/Gold F50 honoured Leo’s fourth Ballon d’Or triumph with four gold suns on the upper, one for each year that he'd won the award. It was a nice tie-in with the Argentina flag, which of course features a sun at its centre, although it didn’t get much chance to shine on-pitch – Messi only wore it once, in the 2013 Copa del Rey quarter-final against Malaga.
The football boot equivalent of a high roller cruising into Monte Carlo, the ultra-limited edition Vapor IX looked utterly resplendent in its suit of white and black with gold accessories. Only 100 pairs were made, making this one of the most sought-after boots around – you’d have to pay about 10 times the original price to get your hands on a pair today.
Don’t read, just look. What an absolute beauty of a boot. The Rare Gold Superfly IV takes the No.1 spot with its stunning gold-into-black spray paint effect, and possibly the best ever execution of the oversized CR7 lettering on the medial side. So crisp.
The boot was produced to mark Ronaldo’s third Ballon d’Or win – hence the 333 pairs that were made – and he had an extra-special version, with micro-diamonds embedded on the CR7 logo. Will the design revealed next week be able to knock these off top spot? We’ll have to wait and see, but for now, the Rare Gold Superfly IV is our favourite special edition Ballon d’Or boot.
